What Maintenance Does a Heat Pump Need?

    4 min read

Heat pumps are low-maintenance systems, significantly less demanding than gas boilers, which require an annual gas safety check. There's no combustion, no flue, and no risk of carbon monoxide.

An annual professional service is recommended and typically costs £100–£200. During a service, the engineer checks refrigerant pressures and temperatures, inspects the outdoor unit for debris or damage, cleans or replaces air filters, tests safety controls and sensors, checks system performance and efficiency, and ensures the controls are optimised.

Between services, there are a few simple things you can do yourself: keep the area around the outdoor unit clear of leaves, debris, and snow. Ensure there's at least 300mm of clear space on all sides for airflow. Check that the condensate drain isn't blocked.

Unlike a gas boiler, there's no legal requirement for an annual safety certificate. However, regular servicing is usually a condition of your manufacturer's warranty and will help maintain peak efficiency.

If you notice any unusual noises, reduced performance, or error codes on your controller, contact your installer promptly. Early diagnosis of issues prevents more expensive repairs down the line.

We offer annual maintenance plans that include a full service visit, priority call-out response, and extended parts coverage. Many of our customers find this gives them complete peace of mind.
