Is My Home Suitable for a Heat Pump?
The honest answer is that most UK homes are suitable for an air source heat pump, but some will benefit from preparatory work to get the best results.
The ideal home for a heat pump has: decent wall insulation (cavity wall or solid wall insulation), double or triple glazing, loft insulation of at least 270mm, adequate outdoor space for the unit (roughly 1m x 1m), and a suitable location for a hot water cylinder.
However, many homes that don't tick every box can still have a successful heat pump installation. Older properties with solid walls can be insulated internally or externally. Single-glazed windows can be upgraded. These improvements also reduce your heating bills regardless of what heating system you use.
Properties that can be more challenging include: flats above ground floor (limited outdoor space for the unit), listed buildings (may need special planning permission), very poorly insulated homes where remedial work would be extensive.
The EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) for your property gives a good starting point, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Our home survey provides a much more accurate assessment of your property's suitability.
